Night on Mackinac Island
Last weekend, we took a trip to Mackinac Island! Eric had a show booked there on Thursday night, so we decided to make a weekend out of it since we'd already be up there. We got packed and headed up to Mackinaw City to meet up with the band and take the ferry over. I hadn't been to the island in years, so I was really excited to be there again! It was even cuter than I had remembered too. I loved it. Plus, it was amazing to see the Round Island Lighthouse and the Round Island Passage Light on the way there!
It's been a total scorcher, so the breeze on the boat felt amazing. We got to the island, had to load up the band's equipment and push it down the street in a giant cart. We checked into the Chippewa Hotel, and had a chance to sit and bask in the air conditioning before their show began! It was so funny, but I was taking pictures and posting to Instagram while I was walking down the road... and a police officer yelled at me for walking and texting. Since you can't drive there (no cars allowed on the island), I guess walking is the new driving! I couldn't believe that though. How funny, right? No walking and texting! Bahaha.
We hopped over to the island's grocery store to load up on wine and snacks before their show began. It was put on by Mackinac Island's Art Council, and they played in Marquette Park, which was right by the fort. It was amazing, especially once the sun went down and it wasn't so hot! I just sat by the singer's wife, Shea, and chatted the whole time while munching on snacks and drinking my mini bottles of Moscato. It was super fun.
After their show, we packed up all of the equipment, and decided to hit up a few of the bars on the main strip. We checked out the Seabiscuit Cafe, and of course, I had to try a Mackinac Island tradition... the Rum Rummer (which is basically just a boozy slushie) and it's so delicious! We also hopped over to Horn's Gaslight Bar & Restaurant and ended at the Pink Pony, which was perfect, because it was right beneath our hotel room! I had another rum runner (now officially my favorite drink), and scooted up to bed before the boys. Win, win! ;)
The next day, Eric and I walked down to meet the rest of the band at Round Island Bar and Grill for a yummy breakfast buffet. We were going to stay on the island all day and ride bikes, but didn't think about the logistics of getting Eric's drums back to the mainland. I would have had to wait on the island for him to ferry it across, and ferry back, so we decided against it. Plus, it was so hot up there and there were so many people. More people than I've ever seen in any other Michigan destination I've been to. I totally get that, but I'd honestly rather be there in the off-season with cooler temperatures and slightly less people. So next time we go, it'll definitely be in September or May.
So we headed back to Mackinaw City, and hung out by the Mackinac Bridge for a while while Eric caught some Pokemon. We grabbed lunch at Darrow's Family Restaurant, and checked into our hotel to take a long nap before heading out for dinner and ice-cream. I'll be back with posts from the city and our time in Cheboygan. Hope you have a great week!
