Talking about fitness
I haven’t chatted about fitness in a while on the blog… so I figured I’d do a little update on my eating/exercise routine, how I’ve maintained my weight loss, and to chat about some of my favorite workout gear! As many of you know I lost 35 pounds in my early twenties, and it was one of the most frequently asked questions on the blog for years! And I did end up gaining it back in my later twenties, only to lose it again in my early thirties. And now I’m super proactive to maintain my weight loss, to continue to be intentional with healthy eating and exercising, and honestly I’m in such a good routine right now that I can’t imagine ever getting to a place where I’d let it all go again. So that’s a great feeling! But let’s chat more…
So yeah, a couple of years ago, I decided to rejoin Weight Watchers and to try a local studio called FLEXcity Fitness. With a lot of hard work, determination, and focus… I lost 30 pounds within 7 months and was more in-shape than ever. Now I’ve maintained that loss since 2017, and even though, I’m not perfect and have my ups and downs, I trust myself and feel more confident than ever to maintain where I’m at, which is such a good feeling! So my normal routine right now is… I’m still on Weight Watchers. I currently use the GREEN plan, so I can have as many points as possible throughout the day. I don’t eat a ton of eggs or chicken/turkey so the blue/purple plan wasn’t worth it to me. I want alllll my points to use on what I want and fruits/vegetables are still 0 points. I generally eat pretty healthy — I cook at home frequently, still eat out but I’m intentional with it. Honestly, I just track my points, and it works for me.
As for exercise, when I was losing weight… I went to FLEX a very-strict 4x a week. No excuses. I’d put it on the calendar, and once it was scheduled, it wasn’t getting canceled/rescheduled. I was FOCUSED! I wish I had that mentality still, haha, but life definitely gets in the way sometimes. Now my goal is 3x a week, but I’m not too strict on it. Sometimes I get there 2x, sometimes I get there 4x, it’s all just a balance. FLEX is a local studio (Lansing and Grand Rapids) but it’s a class that combines cardio and strength training — a normal class can look like: 12 minutes of tread, 12 minutes of spin, 24 minutes of strength, whether that’s barre, free weights, TRX, etc. We end every class with 6 minutes of stretching/yoga. But every class is different! If you’re out of state, think Orange Theory as a similarity. The classes are intense and a lot of work, but it’s such an amazing all-body workout. It’s the only workout I do honestly.
And just to chat workout gear quick… my favorite (and only place) I get workout gear from is Old Navy! Their pieces are just so affordable, and I love the quality. I never have a problem with anything being see-through, or showing sweat marks, or riding down, or anything. Plus they always have massive sales on their workout gear (think 50% off) so when they do that, I typically tend to load up on my favorites — especially their Elevate leggings (7/8 so they’re a bit more cropped) and high support sports bras. As for shoes, I wear the Nike Tanjuns — I have pairs in a couple different colors I rotate through. So yeah — that’s pretty much my routine in a nutshell! Let me know if you have any questions at all in the comments!
