Point Iroquois Lighthouse
During my trip to The Soo, I headed over to Point Iroquois Lighthouse to check another off my Michigan lighthouse list and to enjoy golden hour! I can’t believe I hadn’t been to this one yet… but I’m really glad I saved it and experienced it during my weekend exploring Sault Ste. Marie. This night was one of my favorites. I ate dinner in town, and then drove out the ~30 minutes out to Brimley to see this lighthouse. I loved the drive… I got to scope out some of the backroads, and this one is very easy to find, park, and walk to! There is a lovely wooden boardwalk surrounding it that leads down to the beach. Definitely a great spot to take a walk, check out the lighthouse, and watch the sunset. If you come during regular hours too, you can take a tour to the top!
The Point Iroquois Lighthouse was built to help passing sailors by marking the narrow channel to the St. Mary’s River. In 1865, the Soo Locks opened. And the first lighthouse and keepers residence was built here in 1855, and the light was exhibited in 1857. In 1870, the wooden tower and residence were replaced with the brick buildings that you see today. You can climb the spiral staircase to the top of the 65-foot tower. (I definitely will go back and do this someday!) From the top, you can see Canada, views of Lake Superior, and freighters heading to and from the Soo Locks. They’re open in the summer through September 18, Tuesday through Saturday 9:30am-5pm. Closed Sundays and Mondays, and they close for tours after October 16th for the season.
I walked all around the grounds of the lighthouse snapping a few photos. And then I headed down to the beach to collect a few rocks, and watch the sunset… which was absolutely gorgeous. I had no idea this was such a great sunset spot, so I really lucked out! I’d definitely recommend adding this lighthouse to your list though if you’re exploring Sault Ste. Marie or the eastern part of the UP! To get here, from the intersection of M-28 and I-75, drive 7.5 miles west on M-28 to M-221/ Brimley. Turn right and drive 2.5 miles on M-221 to Lake Shore Drive (FR 42). Turn left on Lake Shore Drive and drive 6.5 miles to the lighthouse. Google maps will take you right there. Happy lighthousing!
