Black Rocks

Hello from Black Rocks! This is one of my favorite spots in Marquette. It’s located in the Presque Isle State Park, which is a large peninsula just north of town. I’ll be blogging lots more about this park (the Presque Isle Harbor Breakwater Light is here too) but there’s so many great places to enjoy here. Black Rocks is a “Marquette staple” — the spot where you see most pictures of people jumping off the 10-15 foot cliffs. It was always a huge bucket list item of mine to jump off these rocks, so I was so glad I did that last August with the girls when we visited for a summer weekend. But yeah, if you’re visiting the area, this is a must-visit, no matter the season!

So for a little bit of information about this area… Presque Isle is French for “almost island”. This park is really a peninsula that feels like an island, sticking out into Lake Superior. There’s a beautiful one-way scenic drive that loops around. It’s one of my favorite “quick drives” in the area… I come out here often to watch the sunset or watch the waves crash because it’s so quick to get to and there’s usually plenty of parking, unless you’re hitting a peak time of day where there are lots of cliff-jumpers. There are two miles of rocky shoreline with ancient rocks that are more than a billion years old. Holy wah!

This day definitely felt more “fall” than the first part of my week in Marquette! I was able to bust out a chunky turtleneck sweater and some of my favorite ankle boots (that are getting slightly destroyed now, haha). I feel bad when I get asked questions about my clothes sometimes… because I tend to buy a lot of my Madewell purchases on sale or at Nordstrom Rack where they tend to sell out quickly. So this exact turtleneck is out of stock, but they just released a similar one in their new fall collection (which I’m loving, of course). And if you’re ever wondering, I do put all of my purchases immediately on my closet board on Pinterest, so be sure to follow along there! I don’t tend to blog my clothes immediately after purchasing. (I know, worst “fashion” blogger ever.) But yeah, I’m excited to move into fall style. I just love cozy vibes and autumnal colors.

I still have so much to blog about! I’m already feeling really panicked about leaving though. I extended my trip a couple of days, just so I could finish out a full weekend here… but I’m already planning my return somehow. I just love it here. I’m a broken record, I know. But I didn’t know a place could make me feel this way, like I was in love or felt complete because of a place. I mean, I always knew being by water meant a lot to me. I grew up in a beach town that whenever I’d feel sad/upset, I’d drive down to the beach. I guess I just didn’t really realize how much I missed that living in Grand Rapids. I started to get a glimpse once I began my running routine along the Grand River, and as much as I love that route and being by the river, it’s just not the same as being by a Great Lake, especially one as special as Lake Superior. This will be a tough place to leave, especially when it feels like home now. How do you let go of a place like this? The only way I think I’ll be able to is the fact that I know it’s always here. I don’t know… I don’t know.
