Sugarloaf Mountain
The top of Sugarloaf Mountain on a rare 75º day in November in the UP… I mean, c’monnnnnnn. I honestly had a lot of anxiety on this day on how I should spend this invaluable time. I had a vacation day from work, was all ready to go, drove out to Ishpeming and was going to do a full day adventure there, only to find many things were closed due to COVID, so I ended up trekking back to Marquette with my tail between my legs, laying in bed for a while, totally lost, and was like… let’s go somewhere super familiar, super comforting, and that’s where I ended up. Sugarloaf Mountain. I’ve been here several times, it’s just a go-to, I bring everyone here that comes to town, it’s such an easy hike to the top, provides the most amazing views, I stayed until sundown, ventured back down in the dark, and felt so much more peaceful than I did before I headed up.
So Sugarloaf is about six miles north of downtown Marquette, you can very easily find it on Google Maps, the turnoff from CR550 is very well marked, and there are two parking lots (one is brand spanking new). It’s a quick hike to the top, there are lots of wooden stairs on the “easy” route that help, and you’re rewarded with some of the most amazing views in town. There are three viewing platforms… one, you can see Marquette, the Superior Dome, the Upper Ore Dock and Presque Isle Park. On another one, you can see Wetmore Landing, Hidden Beach, and Little Presque Isle Island. And the third platform looking west, you can see Hogback Mountain… which I have yet to do! All wonderful views. All the vibes. No matter what season you’re visiting in.
So yeah, 75º. I was honestly a little overdressed in a jacket and boots. During the day, when I was driving around, trying to figure out what to do with my life, I was hot! Windows down, music blaring type hot, hahaha. But after I spent golden hour/sunset at Sugarloaf, I trekked down the mountain, drove around Lakeshore Blvd., spent some time at the Lower Harbor Ore Dock, took in the dusk vibes, ordered a spicy Italian pizza from Smelted Pizza (which is a super good food truck in town), took a walk downtown while I waited for that, got my pizza once it was ready, headed home, watched Netflix in bed. Hahaha. I live a very exciting life UP here. I wouldn’t change it. Sometimes in the moment I feel like it’s hard, being alone, but when I look back on the days themselves, I’m like… I wouldn’t change any of it. Not a single moment. Anyway, gonna sign off here with my sentimental self. More Marquette to come…
