Windmill Island

Um, hi. It’s summer. And I’m still yet to post on the tulip fields. How am I so behind? 😩 So last month, I was down in West Michigan for the week… and I’m so glad it lined up perfectly with tulips being at full peak! Usually I alternate places I go every other year… between here and Veldheer Tulip Gardens, so I decided to head to Windmill Island this year! If you’ve never been before… you have to go, especially when the tulips are in bloom! Windmill Island also has a 250-year-old windmill which is called DeZwann, the only authentic Dutch windmill operating in the United States, a carousel and costumed guides, plus a few cute Dutch-themed shops to stroll. It’s just such a treat to walk around, see the tulips, you can tour the windmill, grab a bite from a food vendor (typically carnival-like during Tulip Time) and just take in the beauty of spring!

Pro tip… I’d always suggest to go on a weekday if you can! The weekends can get crazy, even with bus loads of people being dropped off. So I went on a… Thursday I believe? And it was so low-key! Not very many people strolling around, perfect for setting up my tripod to take photos. It was a bit overcast, with the sun peaking out, which I feel always makes for some of the best photos anyway. Especially if you can’t shoot at golden hour. So yeah! It was a great experience. Lots of fields just wide open with nobody in them for photos. The ideal situation!

After strolling Windmill Island for a while, I decided to head into downtown Holland to check out the little bit of Tulip Time they had going on this year. I ended up stopping into The Curragh Irish Pub for dinner… and sat by myself, ordered wine, and bangers and mash which were so good, hahaha. After dinner, I still had plenty of time before golden hour, so I ended up driving to Holland State Park to watch the sunset and see the Holland Harbor Lighthouse. So yeah… a perfect night spent in Holland strolling the tulip fields, heading downtown for a bite and a drink, and watching sunset at the beach! Gooooo Holland!
